Appointing Authorities

The appointing authority for the NRES Research Ethics Committees (RECs) in England is the Health Research Authority, with equivalent arrangements in Scotland and Wales.
In Northern Ireland, RECs are appointed by the Health and Social Care Business Services Organisation.

The UK Ethics Committee Authority (UKECA) is responsible for the committees within the National Research Ethics Service which are recognised to review clinical trials of investigational medicinal products (CTIMPs).
