Intended use of Samples
These samples will contribute to an understanding of the aetiopathogeneis of arthritis. They will contribute to research which will translate results back to ultimately influence the management and treatment options for people with rheumatoid or osteoarthritis. These common arthritic diseases have a huge financial burden on society, as well as substantial individual morbidity. The research use of the tissue bank will ultimately influence these factors.
This tissue bank will be a necessary resource, available to researchers within the ARC/EU, that will compliment and allow substantial additional value to the programme of genetic research of arthritic diseases that is well established within the ARC/EU. The tissue resource will allow assessment of key genes and related proteins to be studied within the active site of disease. This tissue expression will enable more relevant questions of function to be studied. Access to the tissue samples will be limited to those researchers who sucessfully apply and are approved by the control panel overseeing the use of the samples. This panel will assess the importance of the use of the tissue resource in furthering the scientific objective. They will also assess the number and amount of tissue that will be available for individual research proposals.
The data produced by using the tissue will be published in peer reviewed scientific journals. The result of research using the tissue bank will not benefit individual doners but the wider community of arthritis sufferers.
The main objective in establishing the tissue bank is to further the genetic studies undertaken by the ARC/EU and to speed the translation of the basic science findings into clinical practice.

Research to be undertaken
Basic science studying the RNA, DNA and protein obtained form the tissue. Comparison will be made (within an individual)with the peripheral blood sample, and between individuals at the tissue level.
