Types of Sample from living
Human muscle and non muscle cells - in particular skin cells, blood cells and synovial cells from patients diagnosed with Neuromuscular disease. These tissues/cells will be mostly collected at time of planned surgery, or time of other planned intervention such as muscle biposy.
Types of Sample from deceased
N/A
Intended use of Samples
The samples stored in the biobank would be used in the future to aid research into Neuromuscular Diseases such as a better understanding of the underlying causes of these rare conditions, cellular pathology, better diagnostic tools and biomarkers and development of therapies.
Research to be undertaken
Patient cells will be assessed for differences from control cells in assays which measure the physiological systems which are affected in these diseases (for example cell membrane integrity in muscular dystrophy). By understanding how the cells respond differently researchers aim to correct these problems.
